DESCRIPTION OF ACCIDENT:
On December 18, 2023, the pilots of N875SB escaped serious injury when N875SB crashed during a go-around maneuver at Palm Beach County Glades Airport (KPHK), Pahokee, Florida. The pilots told the government’s investigators that a strong gust of wind lifted the left wing causing the right wing tip to contact the ground. This action caused the aircraft to pirouette around its right wing tip following by at least one cartwheel. The aircraft came to rest shortly thereafter on the runway.
DESCRIPTION OF DAMAGES:
The tail of the aircraft was separated from the empennage as a result of the cartwheel. A piece of the left wing outboard of the left main landing gear broke off as well. The tip of the right wing pulled away from the fuselage. Both wings were cut off from the aircraft for transport. The engine was pushed back into the firewall buckling it and distorting the instrument panel. All three blades on the propeller are bent. The engine was cut off from the firewall for transport. The windshield is broken. The instrument panel is buckled and twisted; however, the radios and indicators appear to be undamaged.
